Newport’s resident surf bums know that Alta is the spot for a good coffee (try their toffee latte – it’s seriously good) and a big plate of breakfast food. The other locals know that Alta is also that hits-the-spot lunch place, a bustling (but in a good way) study spot, and one of the best places to catch live music in the city. There’s something about a late night coffee out on the patio that soothes a Southern California soul.
Alta’s big shady patio welcomes well-behaved dogs of all sizes. While the café’s homey dark wood interior is pretty cozy (it’s a converted old bookstore), there’s nothing like enjoying a pastry and a sea breeze outside with your dog. Since Alta lies on Newport’s Balboa Peninsula, there are plenty of post-meal walk options. Stroll along Newport Harbor on one side, or head west to the beach, where you’ll find miles of boardwalk to explore.
Our ideal night includes a walk along the bay followed by Alta’s veggie tacos & live music on the weekends (check their site for entertainment). Later, get a cup of coffee and a slice of their famous carrot cake. Resist your dog’s puppy eyes – you can finish the whole thing by yourself with a little determination.
