Beagles are one of Alabama’s most popular dog breeds, probably because they are great companions in rural areas. Between the gentle plains surrounding the Mississippi River to the mountains and valleys of the Northern part of the state, Alabama is an agricultural state filled with parks and monuments. Beagles are fun-loving dogs for both adults and children—the perfect companion for outdoor adventures. Known best for their incredible noses, Beagles are scent hounds. An interesting smell equates to heaven in the eyes of a Beagle, which is why fenced in backyards are a must. They need room to roam and sniff, but their instincts can also lead them to roaming off in pursuit of a delicious scent (by dog standards…which is pretty much everything).
Beagles are also notorious for being food driven and often guilty of thievery, stealing food from the trash or pantries any time they get the chance. They have no portion control and will literally eat until they explode, so it is up to you to manage their food intake. But food obsession is all part of their charm, often joked about in the Charlie Brown comics by the Beagle character Snoopy. And hey, if you’re of a similar mindset, a Beagle could be your perfect support system.
The Beagle bark is one that would result in great resentment from the neighbors, should you try to have one in a crowded city. Their constant and distinct-sounding barking is the main reason Beagles are given up for adoption, so know going in that bark control must be part of training. Just one more reason why the sprawling landscape of Alabama is a wonderful place to enjoy life with a Beagle.
