New Orleans prides itself on being weird. Actually, that’s not entirely true.
New Orleans prides itself on not ever noticing anything weird—save for sobriety. So when we tell you that all of the “weirdos” hang in/around Cosimo’s Bar with their dogs and their hats and their ability to stay drunk, yet only seem to work two days a week, it’s the highest of compliments.
Away—but not too far—from all of the madness that is the French Quarter, the neighborhood of Vieux Carre welcomes those who are done with the tourists, too old for the Bywater, not brave enough for the Irish Channel, but not rich enough for Uptown. What this results in is a hodgepodge of artists, writers, and a lot of service industry people. Which, when combined with dogs and strong cocktails, makes Cosimo’s one of our favorite spots.
From their overly comfortable couches (or, perhaps, just the heavy hand of the bartender), to the devil-may-care attitude of both patrons and employees, it’s a dangerously delicious spot to visit during the day. Dogs congregate outside amongst the glitter and glam, bowls of water for themselves and bowls of other stuff for their owners. Employees pride themselves on keeping tabs under patrons’ first names, if that tells you anything about the friendliness of the place.
And that’s really what it’s about. Sure, there are other dog friendly New Orleans bars we’ve written about that deserve all the accolades for their music or beer selection, but when you combine a neighborhood bar with a neighborhood feel and throw in neighborhood dogs with neighborhood prices, well, sister, you have yourself a gem.
