…Poodle
While Iowa is the nation’s largest producer of pork, corn, and eggs, it is also the state with the highest literacy rate. Yes, pigs outnumber humans four to one in Iowa, but pigs are actually one of the most intelligent animals on Earth. The very first computer ever invented was in Iowa. And Iowa’s very high rate of motorcycle ownership indicates a love of the outdoors—along with the farming. The point? Iowa has an historically strong work ethic, both physically and mentally, and both indoors and out. Presumably, Iowans would value the same intelligence and strength in a dog, which is why the Poodle would be a wonderful addition to any Iowan’s home.

Poodles are one of the smartest dog breeds on the planet, if not the smartest. They are considered the most teachable and trainable dogs. Since Iowans don’t joke around about education, this is key. Poodles are known as workaholics who love having a job, much like the first ever female lawyer, inventor of the first computer, and the dozens of Olympic athletes who have all hailed from Iowa.

There’s been a rumor going around since the mid-19th century that “Iowa” translates to “beautiful land” in the native tribe Ioway’s language. It’s not actually true, but it’s stuck, and the landscape really is stunning. So let’s remember that it’s not only Poodles’ brains that make them frequent front-runners in dog shows the world over; they are also distinctly beautiful dogs, coming in a wide variety of colors, sizes, and sub-breeds. Groomers love getting creative with Poodles’ distinctive coats, giving them a dignified air.

Iowa is a rich farming land that provides much of the country with sustenance. It just so happens that Poodles were bred for working land, specifically retrieving kill and hunting for mushrooms. They are very active and will enjoy the rural parts of Iowan life. From the state’s marked beauty to its many great accomplishments, Iowans have much to be proud of. Poodles are known as proud dogs, and would fit in beautifully with the Iowa lifestyle on all fronts.
