You have a decent career job, friends who are good enough to throw back a few beers with on the weekends, and a nice home in a state you love. You may or may not be single, but it’s fine either way because there’s always Tinder. Yet, despite your apparent success, there’s something missing. Ah! Yes, a dog. We’ve done our due diligence and found the perfect rescue dog for residents of all 50 states. This week, Old Mass did our homework for us, and picked the perfect pup for their state dog.

The Massachusetts dog lover has a huge advantage when it comes to choosing a pup: it’s already been chosen for them! The Boston Terrier is Massachusetts’ official state dog, ordained as such because of all the ways in which it embodies Old Mass, starting with its fighting roots. Massachusetts was, after all, the center of the movement for independence from Great Britain in the 18th century. With an intolerance for BS, Massachusetts was the site of the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, and the first military engagements of the American Revolutionary War with the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Massachusetts is also friendly, proudly touting Boston a sanctuary city for refugees and immigrants seeking better lives in the United States.
Boston Terriers were originally bred for fighting, so they too embody Massachusetts’ tough, scrappy history. But like the state, Boston Terriers also have dispositions as sweet as Boston cream pie, and are nicknamed “American gentlemen” for a reason. Boston is home to 35 colleges and is considered a college town. Fittingly, Boston Terriers are highly intelligent and would uphold the city’s devotion to being “wicked smaht.”
With some of the most hard-core sports fans on the planet, it’s only fitting that Massachusetts’ official state dog be an athlete. Boston Terriers are full of energy and need lots of play time. In the state home to the United States’ first public park, there is plenty of beautiful outdoor space for you and your terrier to get some exercise.
