…Portuguese Water Dog
Minnesota: the birthplace of pop-up toasters, roller blades, Honeycrisp apples, rice cakes, cheerleading, and children’s sections in libraries. It was the site of the first open heart surgery and bone marrow transplant, and Orfield Laboratories in South Minneapolis was named the “Quietest Place on Earth” by the Guinness Book of World Records. But Minnesota isn’t just famous for putting things on the map. It’s also famous for its map. Minnesota has enough bodies of water to cover Hawaii and New Jersey combined. Dubbed “The Land of 10,000 Lakes,” it would behoove the Minnesota dog lover to get a water-loving pup, which is why we suggest adopting the dog that loves water so much it’s in the name: The Portuguese Water Dog.

With their adorable and totally functional webbed feet, Portuguese Water Dogs were bred to work on fishing boats, retrieving lost equipment and herding fish into nets. They’re basically the Border Collies of the sea. Minnesota has one recreational boat for every six people, so having sea legs is a big plus for a doggy companion. Plus, their coats aren’t just beautiful like Minnesota’s gorgeous landscape, they’re also hypoallergenic, and, you guessed it, waterproof.

The term “Minnesota nice” is a stereotype of people born in Minnesota, but for good reason. We’ve always found Minnesotans to be incredibly friendly, and you deserve the same in your pup. Portuguese Water Dogs are loving, affectionate, intelligent, and totally fun-loving.

They may originate from Portugal, but they might now be most American dogs in the world. Portuguese Water Dog Bo was First Dog of the Obama White House. The president President loved him so much, he and the First Family opted to get a second to double the joy and playfulness during his two terms by adopting Sunny.
